PreSchool-Grade 1--`` Pretend you're a lion, stalking a meal . . . Or a hairy gorilla with dinner to peel.'' These two variations on a theme invite children to stretch their imaginations before eating ( Hippo ) and bathing ( Whale ). Both are printed on stiff paper; have but six spreads each with one line of verse per spread; and feature bright, simple illustrations with well-chosen pop-ups. The octopus in Whale is particularly effective, with arms that seem to wriggle in every direction. Sunny, playful, and only slightly less sturdy than a lift-the-flap book. --John Peters, New York Public Library
