Inspired by the Jenny Joseph poem "Warning: When I Am An Old Woman I Shall Wear Purple" that begins: "When I am an old woman I shall wear purple/with a red hat which doesn't go, and doesn't suit me," Sue Ellen Cooper bought herself a red hat. When her friend turned 50, she bought one for her too. Soon it became Sue Ellen's signature gift for friends as they turned 50, and in 2000, Sue Ellen and her friends started the Red Hat Society, for women over 50. The Society's only rule is no rules - it's simply an organization for women to have fun, support each other and find kindred spirits. Little did Sue Ellen know that she would spark a revolution. The Red Hat Society has caught on like wildfire. In just a few years, they've increased to over 13,000 chapters! This book discusses all of the things its members talk about: marriage and children, grand-parenting, careers and retirement, physical, mental and spiritual aging, friendship, mothers & daughters, sisterhood in hard times, the genesis of the Red Hat Society, clothes!, rituals, and of course, how readers can start their own chapters. There are currently 11 chapters of THE RED HAT SOCIETY in the UK in the following cities: Bournermouth, Builth Wells, Harrogate, Leicester, Lyme Regis, Maidstone, Nuneaton, Sandown, Shrewsbury, Thornbury, Woking Surrey.
