LOUIS SLOBODKIN (1903-1975) illustrated more than ninety booksfor children, many of which he also wrote. Among his most enduringillustrations are those for the Moffats series by Eleanor Estes,and those for James Thurber's Many Moons, for which Slobodkinreceived the 1944 Caldecott Medal.^James Thurber (1894—1961), oneof the outstanding American humorists and cartoonists of thetwentieth century, was born in Columbus, Ohio, and launched hisprofessional writing career as a reporter for the Columbus Dispatchin 1920. He began writing for The New Yorker in 1927 after hisfriend E. B. White got him a job at the magazine. Though hamperedby failing eyesight, Thurber wrote nearly forty books, includingcollections of essays, short stories, fables, and children’sstories. He won a Tony Award for his popular Broadway play, AThurber Carnival.
